A suit opening in Standard American promises 3+ cards in a minor or 5+ cards in a major. It shows about 13-21 total points in strength.

Responses Edit

  • raise to 2: 6-9 total points, 3-4 in the major or 4-5 in the minor
  • raise to 3: 10-11 total points, 3+ in the major or 4+ in the minor
  • raise to 4: 6-9 total points, 5+ in the major or 6+ in the minor
  • 1/1: 6+ total points, 4+ in the suit, forcing
  • 2/1: 10+ total points, 4+ in the suit, forcing
  • 1NT: 6-9 points, inability to raise or bid 1/1
  • 2NT: 13-15 points, balanced (no raise, no 4-card major nor 5-card minor)
  • 3NT: 16-18 points, balanced

When there is more than one possible bid fitting the above criteria, the priority is:

  1. Raise a major suit
  2. Bid the longest suit
  3. Bid the highest in 5-5 or 6-6
  4. Bid 2NT or 3NT
  5. Bid up-the-line in 4-4
  6. Bid 1NT
  7. Raise a minor suit

Opener's rebids Edit

Minimum hand Edit

Holding 13-15 total points, opener choose one of the following in priority:

  1. Raise partner's suit non-jump holding 4+ of the suit (3 only if no good alternative) (13-15)
  2. Bid a new suit non-jump holding 4+ of the suit (13-18)
  3. Rebid his own suit non-jump holding 6+ of the suit (5 only if no good alternative) (13-15)
  4. Bid notrump non-jump (13-15)

Medium hand Edit

Holding 16-18 total points, opener chooses one of the following in priority:

  1. Jump raise partner's suit holding 4+ of the suit (16-18)
  2. Jump bidding notrump (18-19)
  3. Jump rebid his own suit holding 6+ of the suit (16-18)
  4. Bid a new suit non-jump holding 4+ of the suit (13-18)

Maximum hand Edit

Holding 19-21 total points, opener forces to game by one of the following in priority:

  1. Raise partner's suit to game holding 4+ of the suit
  2. Jump bid a new suit
  3. Bid 3NT with a long solid minor and stoppers in all unbid suits
  4. Bidding game in his own suit

Responder's rebids Edit

Minimum hand Edit

Holding 6-9 total points, responder can choose between:

  • Pass where game is impossible
  • Bid the opener's last suit to raise
  • Bid the opened suit as a preference
  • Bid his own suit again to show length (any 6+ suit or strong 5-card suit)
  • Bid 1NT containing stopper in the unbid suit

Medium hand Edit

Holding 10-11 total points, responder invites game by:

  • Jump raising partner's suit
  • Jump rebidding his own suit
  • Bid 2NT containing stopper in the unbid suit

Maximum hand Edit

Holding 12+ total points, responder forces to game by:

  • Jump raising partner's suit
  • Jump rebidding his own suit
  • Bid 2NT containing stopper in the unbid suit
  • Bid a new suit artificial (unless opener rebids 1NT, after which jump to force)
