Landy is a very simple convention designed to interfere with opponent's 1NT opening. It has been described as sort of a "defensive Stayman".
Convention[]
After right-hand opponent opens 1NT, a bid of 2♣ shows a two-suited hand with both majors. With good honours, 4-card suits are acceptable. Otherwise, 5-card suits are recommended. All other overcalls are natural. The double is for penalty, or could be considered an optional double.
Responses to 2♣ Overcall[]
- Pass with 7+ clubs and a weak hand.
- 2♦ shows no preference, asks partner to bid longer/better major.
- This bid is artificial and forcing. Overcaller bids longer major or 2♥ with equal length.
- Respond in a major suit roughly as if overcaller had opened the major:
- 2NT is forcing, shows 13+ points and no fit
Extensions[]
