A jump bid means bidding a contract on a higher level than necessary (jumping one or more level). For example:

Traditionally, a jump bid is stronger than a non-jump bid. However, as jump bids are a useful tool to obstruct the opponents' bidding, most now play them as weak.

The stop card in a bidding box is usually used in conjunction with jump bids.
