4♥ is the third-most commonly played contract in bridge, after 3NT and 4♠.
Under most circumstances, 4♥ is a sign off bid.
As an opening[]
A 4♥ opening is to play and may be preemptive.
As a response[]
- A direct raise from from a ♥ opening to 4♥ is preemptive, unless 2♥ is strong.
- A jump from 1♣/1♦/1♠ - 4♥ is commonly a splinter, showing a singleton or void in ♥.
- After 1NT or 2NT opening, 4♥ is often Texas transfer to 4♠.
- After a natural 3NT opening, 4♥ is often Jacoby transfer to 4♠.
- After a gambling 3NT opening, 4♥ shows a long suit and is a sign off.
