In the middle of an auction, 4 is very often an invite to 5. Sometimes it is preemptive and simply blocks opponents' communication.

as an opening Edit

A 4 opening is usually natural and preemptive, however, if Namyats is in use, it means a strong hand with long (about 8) s.

In notrump auctions Edit

If notrump has been agreed upon (or, often, was the last contract bid) then a jump to 4 is often Gerber, asking for aces.

Directly after a one-level suit opening Edit

After partner opens in a suit other than clubs, 4 is a double jump and is therefore often used as a splinter bid, showing a singleton or void in clubs.
