Exclusion Blackwood

From Contract Bridge

Exclusion Blackwood (also known as Voidwood) is a variation on Blackwood, for use in distributional hands. When the Blackwood bidder has a void in a suit and trump suit is agreed upon, a jump to 5 of a different suit shows a void in that suit and asks for the other three aces

The responses are given in steps from the Blackwood bid:

  • 1 step shows 0 aces
  • 2 steps shows 1 aces
  • 3 steps shows 2 aces
  • 4 steps shows 3 aces

[edit] In competition

If the Blackwood bid is doubled or overcalled, conventions such as DOPI, ROPI, and DEPO are recommended.

[edit] Key cards

Exclusion Blackwood may also be played with key cards. In this case, there are four key cards available: the three other aces and the king of trump. The responses are the same as normal Roman key card Blackwood except that the fourth ace is missing. Sometimes, the 0/3 key card response is split, as 1 (step)=0, 2=1, 3=2, 4=3. In this case, information about the queen of trump can only be given in the event of opponent's double or low overcall.
